traditions include the
oldest holiday boat parade in the U.S. and the tallest
Christmas tree in the U.S. Fashion Island, a Southern California
open-air shopping center with views of the Pacific Ocean in
Newport Beach, features annually a tree over 100 feet. Normally
a white fir from northern California's Mt. Shasta, the tree
features 17,000 lights and ornaments, and weighs approximately
20,000 lbs. It requires a 10-man crew approx. two weeks to
decorate the giant beauty. The enormous tree makes its
home in the Bloomingdale's Courtyard of Fashion Island.
The majestic tree officially debuts in November each year with a
Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. Santa arrives and a song and
dance spectacular by the California Conservatory of the Arts or
other dance and song performance group is normally featured for
the launch.
Fashion Island works closely
with Victor's Strictly Custom Christmas Trees and the U.S.
Forestry Service to find the perfect, towering tree. Victor's
replants an average of 10 trees for every one tree harvested,
and trees are only removed from designated timber areas where
harvesting will have no detrimental impact on the environment.
Fashion Island's Christmas tree is recycled into mulch after the
holidays every year.
